Bartninku Sv. Apastalu Petro ir Pauliaus baznycia

Graži vieta, Marijampolės apskritis

Built in 1790 to a classicist design by Italian architect Giuseppe de Sacco, this parish church in Bartninkai was funded through land and money donated by Antanas Tyzenhauzas and completed under the administration of Vincentas Puzinas. Around 1855 its priest, Jonas Burdulis-Burdulevičius, began holding services in Lithuanian and teaching parishioners to read the language, and the noted book smuggler Juozas Šmulkštys served here as pastor from 1915 to 1931. The stone church was heavily damaged in 1944 and never rebuilt, so a smaller wooden church erected in 1945 still serves the parish today, while the original masonry ruins, protected as a heritage site since 2003, have had their tower walls stabilized and restored with zinc cladding since 2020.
