Gegužės aikštė

Graži vieta, Vilniaus apskritis

Known locally as Gegužės aikštė, this rectangular square formed centuries ago where roads to Vilnius, Rodūnia and Merkinė once converged, and its surrounding street layout has been protected as a Lithuanian urban planning monument since 1969. A town hall stood here from 1774, and a three-story baroque synagogue built in 1765-1775 once towered over the square as the town's tallest structure. Eleven linden trees were planted here in May 2013 during a community "Darom" action, and the Šalčininkai district government has since added a monument commemorating the 1863 January Uprising.
