Tērvete Hillfort

Graži vieta, Zemgale

Rising above the Tērvete River, this hillfort was continuously settled from the 1st century BC and grew into one of the largest and best-defended strongholds in the Baltic region, with slopes cut 17 to 19 meters high. By 1219 it was recorded as the political center of western Semigallia, ruled in turn by the Semigallian leaders Viestards and Namejs, until the Teutonic Order destroyed the stronghold and built its own stone castle nearby in the late 1330s. Visitors today can still trace the earthen rampart and defensive ditch, along with fragments of the later Teutonic walls and a modern reconstructed timber fortification across the road.
