These concrete pillars in Raseiniai were cast in 1937 during the construction of the Žemaičiai highway. Soviet authorities later tried to demolish them but found them too sturdy to easily destroy, so they buried them instead; during Lithuania's national revival they were dug up and raised higher again. A nearby spring is regarded by local tradition as sacred, said to hold the tears of the Virgin Mary.
