Varniai Regional Park was established in 1992 in Samogitia to protect the landscape of the central Samogitian lake-studded uplands. It covers 33,732 hectares, including the hills of Medvėgalis (234 m), Aukštagirė and Gaudkalnis, while the Paršežeris, Biržulis and Stervas lakes and wetlands in the Varniai basin form a valuable bird habitat in Lithuania. The park is home to 77 plant species listed in Lithuania's Red Data Book.
