Covering 83.9 hectares in Vestienas parish, Madonas novads, this nature reserve protects Ilziņš lake as a significant eutrophic, nutrient rich lake ecosystem within the wider Vestiena protected landscape area and the Natura 2000 network. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 5.3 meters and averages about 2 meters, and it holds fish such as asp, pike, tench, roach, vendace and rudd. Surrounding slope and ravine forests, patches of boreal forest and mineral rich springs support several bat species that use the area as a feeding ground under European protection.
