This forest bunker in Šimkaičiai was the hideout of Gen. Jonas Žemaitis, recognized by the Lithuanian Parliament in 2009 as acting head of state during the Soviet occupation; he was arrested here on 30 May 1953 while being nursed by M. Žiliūtė, and was later executed in Moscow’s Butyrka prison on 26 November 1954. The preserved bunker site includes a monument, a Lithuanian flag, and portraits of Žemaitis displayed inside, and since 2018 has been maintained by the Eržvilkas Cultural Center, which also runs guided historical walking tours to the site.
