Niedrāju Pilkas purva nature trail

Žygis, Vidzeme

Niedrāju-Pilkas dabas taka is a roughly 1-kilometer boardwalk trail through a high bog in the Niedrāju-Pilkas nature reserve, part of the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve in Pāle parish. The route follows the former Valmiera-Ainaži narrow-gauge railway embankment and crosses typical raised-bog terrain of dwarf pines, small bog pools and hummocks. It leads to a wooden observation platform on a forest strip between two bog sections, a spot popular with birdwatchers looking for black storks, cranes, lesser spotted eagles and whooper swans. The reserve, established in 1987, covers 1,029.8 hectares of protected high bog and boggy forest.
