Baltavots

Graži vieta, Kurzeme

In Kurmāle parish, the spring Baltavots churns constantly, its sandy bed kept in motion by upwelling water that gives the roughly two-meter pool the look of a boiling cauldron. Some 200 meters north lies a second spring, Melnavots, whose water filters through a half-meter layer of peat and emerges with a dark tint. Both have been protected as geological monuments since 2001, though neither is signposted and both are difficult to reach on foot. Locals also call Baltavots "Svētavots," meaning holy spring, believing its water carries healing properties.
