Taurētāju kalns

Apžvalgos vieta, Vidzeme

Rising above the right bank of the Gauja near Turaida, this narrow plateau, only about 30 by 10 meters, is defended by ditches up to three meters deep and earthen ramparts cut into the steep slopes below. Also known as Elka kalns or Rata kakts, the site has been documented since the 19th century and was described in detail by researcher K. Rozītis in 1946 as a hillfort-like structure; its alternative names and setting have led researchers to suggest it may have served as a fortified position, a sacred site, or a lookout where guards once signaled danger with horn calls. Wooden stairs and a marked path now connect the hill to the adjoining Rata kalns, with an information sign and shelter for visitors.
