Birštono piliakalnis, also called Vytauto kalnas, is a hillfort on the right bank of the Nemunas River at a sharp bend where the river loops eastward. Its oval platform, about 70 by 35 meters, sits atop slopes 13 to 20 meters high and was once ringed by defensive moats; a wooden castle recorded in written sources from 1382 and 1387 stood here, and by tradition Grand Duke Vytautas rested at the site after hunting trips. A stairway now leads visitors to the summit, which overlooks the Nemunas and the loop of the river below.
