Klaipėda Castle

Graži vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

Klaipėda Castle (Memelburg in German) was built in 1252 by the Livonian Order at the point where the Danė river meets the Curonian Lagoon - one of the earliest known origins of the city itself. It was fought over for centuries by the Teutonic Order, Sweden and Prussia, and rebuilt many times. Most of its fortifications were later demolished as the city expanded - only a bastion, moat and convent building survive, which today house the Klaipėda Castle Museum, telling the story of the city's medieval history.
