Eketės piliakalnis

Graži vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

Standing on the right bank of the Eketė stream in Sendvaris, this hillfort was one of the largest and most powerful strongholds of the Curonians, serving as a political, military and economic center from the 9th to the 13th century. Its platform measures roughly 110 by 105 meters and was once protected by five earthen ramparts and four ditches, with the surviving northern rampart still about 130 meters long and 8-9 meters high. Excavations carried out in 1972 uncovered weapons, tools and toys dating from the 1st to the 13th century, and the site has hosted Joninės (midsummer) celebrations since the early 20th century. Klaipėda district municipality is currently funding a renovation to add information stands, a footbridge and visitor paths.
