Aukštojas

Graži vieta, Vilniaus apskritis

Aukštojas is Lithuania's highest point at 293.84 meters above sea level, located near Juozapinė village about 24 km southeast of Vilnius, close to the Belarusian border, within the Medininkai highlands moraine massif. Its surface formed during the penultimate glacial period from moraine clay and sand mixed with gravel and boulders, with gentle north and east slopes and steeper, ravine-cut south and west slopes. The hill was officially named in 2005 after Aukštojas, the supreme god of Baltic mythology, replacing the neighboring Juozapinė hill (292.90 m) as the country's highest point, and it lies within the 251-hectare Juozapinė Geomorphological Reserve.
