Moricsala is a strict nature reserve on a small island in Lake Usma, protected since 1912 and one of the oldest nature reserves in the Baltic region. Its untouched broadleaf and oak forest supports an unusually rich variety of plants, mosses and butterflies, some found nowhere else in Latvia. As a strict reserve, public access to the island itself is not permitted, and it is reserved for scientific research.
