Nemunaičio atodanga

Apžvalgos vieta, Alytaus apskritis

On the right bank of the Nemunas River near Nemunaitis village, this geological outcrop exposes calcareous tufa formed as calcium carbonate precipitated out of groundwater over time. The main exposed section runs about 100 meters and rises 15 to 20 meters, part of a broader, intermittent tufa formation stretching roughly 900 meters along the riverbank, with individual layers 10 to 15 meters thick and colored light gray to yellowish. First described by professor Pranas Juodelė in 1909, the outcrop was declared a nature monument in 1987 and remains protected as a geological heritage site.
