Joniškėlis manor has been recorded since 1684 and passed to the Karpiai (Karp) family in 1723, who later won a royal privilege to found a town on the estate complete with its own church, school and hospital. Rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original wooden buildings in 1736, the surviving ensemble of roughly 20 buildings across 34 hectares, including old and new mansions built in a Baroque-influenced classicist style, ranks among the largest and best-preserved manor complexes in Lithuania. Visitors can walk the surrounding park, through which the Mažupė river flows, and see the museum now housed in the main mansion.
