Šilalės kūlis

Graži vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

Standing on the bank of the Šakalės stream within the Salantai Regional Park, this granite boulder ranks as the fifth-largest stone in Lithuania, measuring 7.48 meters long, 5.48 meters wide and 3.66 meters high. Its rock is a distinctive rapakivi granite, made up of large rounded crystals of red orthoclase rimmed with pale plagioclase. Archaeologists believe a pagan shrine with a hearth and stone altar operated beside the boulder from around the 16th into the 17th century, and older folklore holds that the wind's son sleeps beneath it.
