The first wooden church on this site was built in 1430 under Bishop Mikalojus Dziergavyčius, with the parish formally established in 1502 by order of Queen Bona. The wooden structure burned down and was rebuilt twice (1655, 1741) before the current Neo-Gothic brick church was erected in 1901-1907 under pastor Fr. Kazimieras Marcinkevičius and consecrated in 1907 by Bishop Mečislovas Paliulionis. A major fire in 1940 destroyed the spire’s interior, with full restoration and reconsecration following in 1993. The two-towered, cruciform Neo-Gothic church houses artwork by local artists, including apostle statues and a crucifix by sculptor Vincas Grybas on the main altar, while the churchyard holds a Good Shepherd statue and a cross marking Lithuania’s 600th baptism anniversary.
