Paplūdimys, Vilniaus apskritis
This beach lies on Gėla Lake (Gėlos ežeras), a roughly 22-hectare, pine-forest-ringed lake near Nemenčinė in the Vilnius district, rather than on any sea coast. Researchers at Lithuania's Nature Research Centre found that the bright white material coating the shore is not clay at all but ežerinė klintis (lake marl, also called lake chalk), a soft chemogenic sediment made up of roughly 56% calcium oxide and 44% carbon dioxide that precipitated out of the lake's mineral-rich water over time. Gėla is reportedly the only lake in Lithuania with such extensive white sediment visible above the waterline, though visitors should watch for broken glass reported in the clay-bath area.
