Liepajas Southern Forts

Graži vieta, Kurzeme

Built as part of the Liepāja Naval Fortress between 1890 and 1906 under orders from Russian Tsar Alexander III, this fortification sits between Klaipēdas Street and the beach in southwestern Liepāja, west of the Thunder River outlet. It was designed to guard the naval port from the south but, unlike the city's better-known Northern Forts, was constructed as reinforced concrete emplacements with a moat and never saw combat, with armaments never even installed. Its cellars were later used for storage during both World Wars and the surrounding area held various factories between the wars. The fortress system as a whole was declared a strategic mistake and decommissioned within a decade of completion, in 1908.
