dabas liegums „Vidzemes akmeņainā jūrmala”

Vieta, Rigas regions

Protected since 1957 in Limbažu Municipality's Liepupe and Salacgrīva parishes, this 1,517-hectare reserve runs along roughly 12.8 km of the Gulf of Riga coast between Meleki and Tūja. Its beaches, 20 to 40 meters wide, are strewn with granite, gneiss, and granite-gneiss boulders, averaging about 2,600 stones per hectare, carried here by Baltic Ice Lake waves and glacial movement 13,000 to 10,000 years ago; sandstone outcrops 350-380 million years old are exposed at Ķurmrags, one of three rocky headlands along with Rankuļrags and Kutkāju rags. The Veczemju cliffs, over 200 meters long and rising 3-4 meters with caves and grottos, are the reserve's most striking geological feature, and the whole area forms part of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve.
