Stompaku purvu partizānu taka

Žygis, Latgale

Running through the Stompaku purvi nature reserve, a 3,881-hectare protected bog and forest area established in 1977 south of the village of Stompaki in Balvu Municipality, this roughly 1.5-kilometer marked trail crosses the wettest stretches of the bog on wooden footbridges. It leads to the site of a national partisan camp that once sheltered around 350 people in 24 bunkers, along with stables, a bakery, and a bread oven, making it the largest such settlement recorded in the Baltics. The camp was attacked by Soviet security forces on 2 March 1945 in what became known as the Stompaki battle, and since the reserve borders Russia, visitors must carry a passport.
