Luponių hillfort

Graži vieta, Šiaulių apskritis

Luponių piliakalnis rises in Luponiai village, in the Kužiai eldership of Šiauliai district, and is also known locally as Perkūnkalnis or Raganų kalnas. The steep-sided hill carries an oval plaza roughly 40 by 33 meters, edged on its northwestern side by a surviving 22 meter long rampart, with a lower forecourt terrace several meters below the main platform. Historians believe it was one of the main strongholds defending northern Lithuania against the Teutonic Order up until the 14th century. Excavations in 1900 to 1901, 1968 and 1997 uncovered a settlement at the hill's foot with 10th to 13th century finds, including an iron spearhead, a whetstone, a bronze ring and pottery.
