This former German prisoner-of-war camp near Macikai operated from 1941 to 1944, first as Stalag 331 and later renamed Stalag Luft VI, holding airmen and other captured soldiers from Poland, the USSR, the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand, with an estimated peak population of around 10,000 prisoners. Archaeological work in 2020 uncovered the remains of more than 1,000 prisoners buried nearby in Armalėnai village, which were later reburied at the camp cemetery. The site today preserves the former solitary confinement building, a bathhouse and prisoner graves, and since 1995 has operated as a branch museum of the Šilutė Hugo Šojaus Museum.
