Eigulių piliakalnis

Apžvalgos vieta, Kauno apskritis

Rising on the left bank of the Neris in Kaunas's Eiguliai district, this hillfort carries an earthen platform 70 by 60 meters with rounded corners and a 5-6 meter embankment on its eastern side, cut off from the higher ground beyond by roughly a 50-meter trench. A 14th-century chronicle records a wooden castle here, Egollen, first mentioned in 1379 and burned down by the Teutonic Order on 30 June 1382. Excavations of an adjacent cemetery uncovered 47 inhumation and 4 cremation burials from the 4th-7th centuries, along with iron tools, weapons, jewelry, and amber ornaments, while nearby finds trace settlement back to the Palaeolithic.
