Hercoga Jēkaba laukums

Graži vieta, Zemgale

This square in central Jelgava began life in the late 16th century, when Duke Friedrich Kettler of Courland and Semigallia set aside a plot of land for a weekly market, and it was known simply as Tirgus laukums (Market Square) for centuries. After a canal linking the Driksa and Svēte rivers left the ground perpetually muddy, the square became the first in the city to be paved, in the late 17th century. It took its present name honoring Duke Jacob only in the mid 1930s, was renamed Centrālais laukums and held a Lenin monument during the Soviet period from 1974 to 1990, and reverted to Hercoga Jēkaba laukums in 2001.
