Ašķeres (Spīdalas) taka

Žygis, Vidzeme

Following both banks of the Ašķeres stream for roughly 400 metres near Skrīveri in Aizkraukles novads, this trail links the Riga-Daugavpils highway with Aizkraukle Castle hill, which offers views over the Sēlija region. It carries its alternate name, Spīdalas taka, after Spīdala, the maiden of Aizkraukle in Andrejs Pumpurs’ epic "Lāčplēsis". The stream’s rocky, glacially-carved ravine, formed roughly 15,000 years ago, shelters one of Latvia’s most stable populations of the large dormouse, and archaeologists trace a 7th- to 11th-century Scandinavian trading port to where the stream meets the Daugava.
