President Antanas Smetona planted this oak in Raseiniai's central square on June 24, 1934, at the unveiling ceremony of the "Žemaitis" independence monument nearby. That same year the square was renamed Antano Smetonos aikštė in honor of the president's 60th birthday, a name it kept until the Soviet occupation. The oak has since grown into a mature tree still standing beside the monument.
