Before World War II most residents of the town center were Jewish; center-square residents were typically merchants or craftspeople, which is why most buildings around the square have multiple entrances with wide doors and steps. A surviving stone-paved surface recalls the town's old market days, and the square was where remains of partisans killed nearby between 1944 and 1954 were desecrated.
