Kryžių kalnas

Graži vieta, Šiaulių apskritis

This hillfort between Jurgaičiai and Domantai villages, about 12 kilometers north of Šiauliai, is believed to be the site of a 14th century wooden castle recorded as destroyed by the Teutonic Knights in 1348. It has been a pilgrimage site since the 19th century, and pilgrims have kept covering it with crosses even through repeated Soviet-era demolitions, most notably in 1961. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass here in 1993 and addressed thousands of pilgrims, cementing the hill's status as one of Lithuania's most visited places of faith. Today it holds an estimated hundreds of thousands of crosses of every size, left by visitors from around the world.
