Širmės hillfort

Graži vieta, Telšių apskritis

Širmės piliakalnis is a hillfort on the right bank of the Virvytė River near Janapolė, on the former western shore of the now-drained Lake Biržulis. It is the summit of a multi-hill massif where archaeologists have found Mesolithic camps, Neolithic and Bronze Age fishing settlements, an Iron Age fortified settlement, and an early 16th-century Lithuanian-Polish denarius, evidence that this was the site of the medieval settlement of Viržuvėnai from the 12th to 16th centuries. The nearby Alkakalnis hill, 800 metres away, forms part of the same ancient ritual complex.
