Pavištytis I hillfort is the highest hillfort in Vilkaviškio district (229.5 m above sea level), dated to the first millennium, with a striking panorama over Lake Vištytis. It was declared a state-protected heritage object on April 29, 2005. According to legend, a church once sank into the hillfort, and its bells can supposedly still be heard ringing from below on Easter morning.
