Mūro Strėvininkų hillfort

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This hillfort on the left bank of the Strėva river, also historically known as "Strėvininkai," had its southwestern section and all defensive works there destroyed in the 1950s-60s when the Bačkonys hydroelectric station and a new canal were built beside it, so nothing is known of its pre-dam appearance. The surviving trapezoidal plateau runs 23 meters long and 20 meters wide on the east side, narrowing to 8.5 meters at the west end, with a remaining rampart edge at the southwest and slopes reaching 16 meters high, dated to the first millennium. Local folklore describes a pit within the hillfort where fires were kept burning to cremate the dead, next to two stones that were recently pushed into the Bačkonys reservoir.
