Raseinių Magdės šulinys

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This well in Raseiniai carries two competing origin legends. One tells of a Polish nobleman who abducted a beautiful girl named Magda and tried to force her into marriage; her grieving father is said to have carved a statue of his daughter, and tears flowing from its eyes formed the spring. Another traces the name to an 18th century Frenchwoman, Magdalena, the first dressmaker in Žemaitija, whose Parisian fashions local women copied so widely that "Raseinių Magdė" became a folk expression.
