On the bank of the Tirza River in Lejasciems, at the spot where a bridge once crossed until it was dismantled in 1962, Gulbene municipality unveiled a participatory environmental art object known as the stone swans on July 29, 2017. Designed by Māra Medne and coordinated by Inga Nagle, it was created as part of the region's "100 Swans for Latvia's Centenary" initiative ahead of the country's 100th anniversary. Despite a name that translates roughly as "big stone swans," this is not a natural boulder field: visitors are invited to bring a stone of their own and add it to the swan-shaped arrangement, so the installation keeps growing rather than staying fixed.
