Žaliosios girios biosferos poligonas

Graži vieta, Panevėžio apskritis

This biosphere polygon protects part of the Žalioji giria forest, stretching about 20 kilometers along road 191 between Paliūniškis and Vabalninkas across the Panevėžys and Kupiškis districts. Established by an environment minister's decree in December 2004, it covers 14,174 hectares, including a 3,103 hectare botanical-zoological reserve and genetic reserves of alder and pine, with the Pyvesa river running through the middle. The territory was set up to safeguard breeding populations of black stork, European honey buzzard and Eurasian pygmy owl, and it forms part of the Natura 2000 network.
