Sudrabkalniņš

Graži vieta, Rigas regions

Rising between Slokas Street and Kurzemes prospekts in Riga's Kurzeme district, this hill carries a granite war memorial designed by sculptor Kārlis Zāle and architect Ernests Štālbergs, officially unveiled in 1937. Its stone wall, built partly from blocks salvaged from Daugavgrīva Fortress and leftover Freedom Monument granite, honors soldiers of the 6th Riga Infantry Regiment killed in November 1919 while driving Bermontian forces out of Anniņmuiža during Latvia's War of Independence. Soviet authorities later stripped its bronze plaque and reliefs; the memorial was restored in 2005, and locals still gather at the site each November 11 to mark the battle.
