Medvėgalis

Graži vieta, Telšių apskritis

Rising to 234.6 meters, this hill holds the highest point of the Samogitian Upland and was the site of a wooden fortress first recorded in written sources in 1316. Teutonic Knights besieged it more than twenty times over the following decades, finally burning it down in 1329. The surrounding archaeological complex of seven hillocks was restored for visitors in 2006 by Varniai Regional Park, and the hill’s defenders inspired both a local legend about two young women who guided them along back roads and a poem by Lithuanian poet Maironis.
