Vällämägi

Graži vieta, Võrumaa

Rising to 303.9 meters beside Haanja village in Haanja Nature Park, this solitary hill climbs 84 meters from its base to its summit, a steeper relative rise than the 60 meters of Suur Munamägi, even though Suur Munamägi’s peak sits higher overall at 318.1 meters. Its slopes reach 35 to 40 degrees in places and were built from moraine left by melting ice sheets around 13,000 years ago, while a bog on its flank holds Estonia’s thickest recorded peat layer at 17 meters. The hill has carried landscape-reserve protection since 1959, and a 2.2 km marked trail with 13 information boards, laid out in 1998, loops over its summit past an RMK hiking lodge with a sauna and sleeping space for 12.
