Documentary evidence of a Lutheran presence in the area dates to 1579, with the present parish community forming in the 18th century; the existing wooden church, on a hill overlooking the Nemunas River, was built around 1849 and is one of the oldest Evangelical Lutheran sanctuaries in the Panemunė region. During the Soviet period, when most Lutheran churches in Lithuania were closed or destroyed, this parish remained active and became one of the country’s most important Lutheran centers, drawing believers from Jurbarkas, Kaunas and beyond, with services historically held in both Lithuanian and German for its mixed community. Both the original wooden church and its rectory survive today.
