Kurkse bonfire site

Laužavietė, Laanemaa

Kurkse is a small harbor village on the strait that separates the Estonian mainland from the Pakri Islands, in Lääne-Harju Parish, Harju County. Its harbor is the usual departure point for boat trips to Väike-Pakri and Suur-Pakri, sitting between Keibu Bay and Paldiski Bay on Estonia's northwest coast. No public bus reaches the village itself, with the nearest stops at Harju-Risti and Padise and the nearest rail station at Vasalemma. Lighting a Jaanipäev (Midsummer) bonfire directly on the shore is a widespread coastal tradition in this part of Estonia, consistent with a bonfire site being marked here.
