Graži vieta, Latgale
Buried in forest about six kilometers east of the Nīcgale railway station, this rapakivi granite boulder is recognized as the largest known stone in Latvia, measuring 10.5 by 10.4 meters and standing 3.5 meters tall with a girth of 31.1 meters. Geologists trace its origin to bedrock in southwest Finland, carried to the site by glacial ice roughly 13,000 to 14,000 years ago. In 1938 a local forester had three steps carved into its side, and 18th and 19th century accounts describe area landlords setting up a table and seats on its flat top to rest during hunts. It has held protected natural monument status since 2001 and protected archaeological monument status since 1997.
