Apšės biosferos poligonas

Graži vieta, Klaipėdos apskritis

Spanning four sections of the Apšė River valley along the Lithuania-Latvia border near Trūbakiai, this protected area of slow-moving water, wet meadows and pastures is left largely to natural overgrowth with reduced farming, with only a small portion still cultivated. It was set up chiefly to protect the corncrake, a meadow-nesting bird listed in Lithuania's Red Book and threatened across Europe by early mechanized haymaking that destroys nests and kills adults and chicks alike.
