Trakai Island Castle

Graži vieta, Vilniaus apskritis

Trakai Island Castle is one of Lithuania's most recognizable symbols of statehood. Construction began in the late 14th century under Duke Kęstutis and was completed by Grand Duke Vytautas the Great, who died in the castle in 1430. It stands on an island in Lake Galvė, connected to the shore by bridges. Left in ruins after the Swedish wars, it was substantially reconstructed in the mid-20th century based on surviving historical evidence, and today houses the Trakai History Museum. Medieval festivals and historical reenactments are held on the grounds in summer.
