Vetygalos atodanga

Apžvalgos vieta, Utenos apskritis

Rising about 25 meters above the Šventoji River near Vetygala village in Anykščiai District, this cliff exposes pre-glacial Devonian layers of light quartz and glauconite sand roughly 400 million years old. Fossilized remains of the armored fish Asterolepis radiata, dated to 300-350 million years ago, were found here and entered into Lithuania's record book in 1993 as the oldest fish discovered in the country. The outcrop has been protected as a geological nature monument since 1964, and stairs and viewing platforms have since been added for visitors.
