This marks the Mazsalaca end of the ‘Zaļais dzelzceļš’ (Green Railway), a roughly 58-kilometer gravel-and-earth trail laid over a decommissioned railway line that once ran between Lāde, Limbaži and Rūjiena. Built as a car-free recreational corridor for walkers and cyclists, it is marked with kilometer posts and information boards and connects near Puikule to the separate Ainaži-Valmiera greenway. The route is flat and well-graded, making it suitable for families, with camping available nearby at Ozolciems by Lake Burtnieks.
