Žiežmarių sinagoga

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This striking wooden synagogue, built in the mid-19th century, is one of only 14 surviving wooden synagogues in Lithuania, which may be the only country in the world with surviving wooden synagogues. Built of logs, divided by vertical braces and clad vertically in boards with battens, its asymmetrical main west facade and hall are lit by 18 windows, more than required by Jewish religious law. Damaged by fire in 1918 but rebuilt, it stands on a site whose first synagogue dates to 1690-1696; by the 19th century the town had three synagogues, since Jews made up the majority of the population. Now maintained by Kaišiadorys district municipality under a loan-for-use agreement, it has been renovated for public education, culture and tourism purposes and is part of a Camino Lituano pilgrimage route.
