Graži vieta, Vidzeme
This oak stands in Jērcēni Parish, part of Valmiera Municipality, and ranks as the second-thickest large oak in both Latvia and the wider Baltic region. Its trunk was split open by a lightning strike, leaving a hollow with three openings, one large gap facing north, a smaller one to the south, and a third that opens toward the sky. Locals still gather at the tree for weddings and christenings, and it has been protected since 1977 as a natural monument and since 1994 as an archaeological site. In 2023 it was voted Latvia’s Tree of the Year and went on to the international European Tree of the Year final.
