This memorial cross commemorates the June 1941 Pravieniškės camp massacre. Before the war the camp held around 450 short-sentence prisoners, including 80 interned Poles and 20-30 convicted Red Army soldiers, guarded entirely by Lithuanians and forced into peat-cutting labor. On June 26, 1941, a Red Army detachment with an armored vehicle arrived and executed camp staff and their families, then machine-gunned the assembled prisoners for 15-20 minutes, finishing survivors with bayonets and a grenade; roughly 260 people died in total, and on June 29, 1941, 182 victims were buried at the camp.
